Thursday night (4 May 2006), I gave myself the theme of covering the
younger opposition candidates at their rallies. This would mean covering
the Workers' Party rally at Ang Mo Kio, then leaving midway to dash over
to Chua Chu Kang to catch Steve Chia of the Singapore Democratic Alliance.
Ang Mo Kio Group Representation
Constituency is a 6-man constituency, where the incumbent Members of
Parliament is a team led by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Challenging
him and his team at this election are 6 rookies from the Workers' Party. 3
of them are in their twenties, 2 in their thirties, with Gopal Krishnan,
the minority-race candidate for the team, aged 52.
Ang Mo Kio GRC has never seen a contest
since it was formed in 1991.
Prior to that however, the PAP's Lee
Hsien Loong faced contests in his single-member Teck Ghee constituency,
before it was absorbed into the GRC. In 1984, Lee got 80.4% of the votes
while in 1988, he received 79.1%
The Workers' Party rookies are not
expected to win in Ang Mo Kio GRC, but if they can obtain a significant
percentage of the votes, it may embarrass the PAP, and Lee particularly.
