Yawning Bread Photo Essay - 19 December 2007
Futsal on International Migrants Day

One in four persons living in Singapore are non-Singaporeans. Most of these are low-wage migrant workers.

They serve us as domestic workers, or do the dangerous and dirty work in construction, shipbuilding and sanitation that Singaporeans generally don't want to do.

Despite their numbers, they remain isolated from Singapore society; our interactions with the few we meet are purely functional. Even though we see them all over the place, it's as if we see only their bodies as economic machines, and never see their faces.
